Wet basement? Flooded crawlspace? Leaking foundation?

Sump Pump Failure

Your sump pump is the last line of defense against groundwater. When it fails during a storm or thaw, the pit overflows and the basement floods—often while you're asleep or away.

Do this right now

  1. Check that the pump is plugged in and the GFCI outlet hasn't tripped
  2. Lift the float gently—if the pump starts, the float was stuck
  3. Clear debris from the pit and check the discharge line outside isn't frozen or clogged
  4. If the power is out, use a battery backup or generator (outdoors, away from windows)
  5. Bail or wet-vac the pit to buy time if the pump is dead

Warning signs

  • Water in the pit rising above the pump
  • The pump hums but doesn't move water
  • The pump runs constantly or cycles on and off every few seconds
  • A tripped breaker or GFCI on the pump circuit

What the waterproofing contractor will do

A contractor can replace the pump, add a battery or water-powered backup, install a high-water alarm, and fix discharge lines that freeze or dump water right back toward the foundation.

What affects the price

A like-for-like pump replacement is the low end. Battery backups, alarms, a new pit or rerouting the discharge line add to the total. Providers set their own prices, so ask for any service-call or inspection fee and an estimate first.
